Probe Triggered by Scam Allegations
Lucknow: A joint committee of the Uttar Pradesh legislature has unearthed major irregularities in the doctor recruitment process at King George’s Medical University (KGMU). The probe was initiated after allegations of a recruitment scam surfaced.
Reservation Policy Violations Found
According to findings, despite 108 reserved posts (including backlog), only 30 were filled. Shockingly, several qualified candidates from prestigious institutes such as the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute (SGPGI) were marked as “Not Found Suitable.”
Inquiry Ordered by Deputy CM
The inquiry was ordered by Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak. Reports suggest that the recruitment process failed to adhere to reservation norms. Allegations also claim that appointments were hurriedly finalised overnight, favouring non-reserved candidates. KGMU officials, however, maintain that the process was conducted as per rules.
Committee Seeks Interview Recordings
The legislative committee has now demanded interview recordings and related documents from the KGMU administration. In response, the University has stated it will seek permission from the Governor’s office before releasing the information.
Past Controversies at KGMU
This is not the first time KGMU has faced scrutiny. In 2021, the University’s Vice-Chancellor was served a notice by the Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta over alleged irregularities in doctor recruitment in the plastic surgery department, and in the purchase of COVID-19 testing kits.
The complaint, filed by social activist Srikant Singh, alleged that the most qualified MCH candidate in plastic surgery was overlooked, while an MBBS-DNB doctor from a private Nepal college was appointed instead.
