Pioneering Surgical Milestone
Srinagar: The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has achieved a landmark in surgical care by successfully performing a first-of-its-kind minimally invasive, scar-free thyroid surgery, officials announced on Friday.

Advancing Regional Surgical Capabilities
The breakthrough underscores SKIMS’ growing expertise in advanced surgical techniques and reinforces its position as a leading institution in providing cutting-edge, patient-centric care in Jammu and Kashmir.

Expert Team Leads Procedure
The procedure was conducted by the Department of General and Minimal Invasive Surgery, under the leadership of Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Malik, Head of the Department and the Endocrine & Breast Surgery Division, according to a UNI report.

Technically Complex, Scar-Free Surgery
The innovative thyroid surgery employed a remote-access, minimally invasive technique to remove the thyroid gland without leaving any visible scar on the neck, a spokesperson from SKIMS said.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Approach
The procedure represents a major advancement in laparoscopic surgery, offering precision, reduced postoperative trauma, and faster recovery. It has received appreciation at both state and national surgical forums for its patient-friendly outcomes.

SKIMS Commitment to Innovation
“Such path-breaking advancements reflect SKIMS’ unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence. Introducing scar-free, minimally invasive thyroid surgery in the region not only elevates our clinical capabilities but also brings world-class surgical care closer to the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” said SKIMS Director M. Ashraf Ganie.

Enhanced Patient Safety Initiatives
Medical Dialogues previously reported that SKIMS has also set up a Pharmacovigilance Committee to monitor Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and conduct benefit-risk assessments of medicines. A similar committee has been established at SKIMS Medical College and Hospital, Bemina, chaired by the respective Medical Superintendents.

Patient-Centric Healthcare Focus
These advancements reflect SKIMS’ broader strategy to provide advanced, equitable, and patient-centric healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring that innovations in treatment and drug safety directly benefit the community.
