A major security breach was reported at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, after hospital authorities discovered a woman allegedly impersonating a lab assistant and collecting blood samples from unsuspecting patients. The incident has sent shockwaves through the hospital administration and raised concerns about patient safety.

Patients and Staff Alert Authorities
According to the IGMC administration, multiple patients and staff members reported that an unidentified woman had been moving around various wards, claiming she was authorised by the laboratory to collect blood samples. The complaints prompted immediate action from the hospital authorities.

No ID Proof Presented During Inquiry
The woman was summoned to the office of the Medical Superintendent for questioning. Officials stated that she failed to produce any identification card or documentation to verify her role. Her inability to provide proof raised further suspicion about her intentions and activities within the hospital.

Complaints of Misuse of Lab Equipment
Hospital officials also received reports from different wards regarding possible misuse of laboratory instruments and instances of harassment of patients in both the wards and the emergency area. A statement by Medical Superintendent Rahul Rao highlighted the seriousness of the allegations and the threat posed to patient safety.

Claimed Association with Private Diagnostic Lab
During interrogation, the woman claimed she had previously worked with a private diagnostic centre and was authorised to collect samples on their behalf. She also mentioned another individual named Shekhar, alleging he was associated with her in carrying out these unauthorised activities within the hospital premises.

Matter Referred to Police for Action
Given the severity of the breach and concerns of unauthorised sample collection, the IGMC administration formally referred the case to the police for a detailed investigation. The authorities emphasised that such incidents could compromise medical accuracy, patient trust and hospital security.

Police Begin Investigation
Police officials confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to determine the extent of the impersonation and whether more individuals or external agencies were involved. Further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.

Previous Instances of Medical Impersonation Highlight Risks
In a similar case previously reported, a man from Assam was found impersonating an obstetrician and gynaecologist for nearly a decade, participating in over 50 surgeries and handling multiple pregnancy cases before finally being arrested. Such incidents underline the urgent need for stricter verification systems in medical settings.

Hospital Administration Urges Vigilance
The IGMC administration has urged staff and patients to remain alert and immediately report any suspicious individuals or activities, stressing that safeguarding patient care and hospital integrity is of utmost priority.
