Chennai: Dr. K. Jagadeeswaran, a Tamil Nadu-based doctor who was allegedly detained and tortured by Russian authorities in Sochi over suspected links with Ukraine, returned to India on Monday night after spending three months in jail. His release comes after coordinated efforts by the Indian government and political representatives.

Background of the Doctor: Jagadeeswaran, a resident of Tiruvallur district, earned his medical degree from an Armenian University in 2022 and has been living in Armenia with his wife, Yamini. The couple had visited Tamil Nadu in August 2025 to meet their families when the incident occurred.

Detention at Sochi Airport: According to his wife, Jagadeeswaran traveled to Russia on a tourist visa with a friend, Shekhar Manikandan, on September 15. Upon arrival at Sochi airport, Russian immigration authorities detained him after discovering he had studied medicine in Ukraine, citing issues with their passports and questioning both individuals.

Alleged Torture and Imprisonment: Jagadeeswaran was held in detention while his friend was released and deported after a week. During his imprisonment, he alleged that he was tortured and humiliated, and his health deteriorated. His cell phone and laptop were confiscated, preventing contact with his family for 15 days.

Charges and Legal Issues: The Russian authorities reportedly filed various charges against him, claiming non-cooperation with immigration officials. Jagadeeswaran maintained that he had no current connection with Ukraine and that the charges against him were false. He also said the Indian Embassy was not informed of his arrest.

Family and Government Intervention: Following his detention, Jagadeeswaran’s family appealed to both the Central and Tamil Nadu governments, including a petition through BJP state president Nainar Nagendran. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar were informed, and the Indian government engaged with Russian authorities to secure his release.

Release and Return: Russian authorities eventually confirmed his innocence and released him. Jagadeeswaran traveled from Russia to Delhi and then to Chennai, where he arrived safely on Monday night, reuniting with his family after three months of detention.

Doctor’s Statement: Speaking after his return, Jagadeeswaran thanked the Indian Embassy officials, political leaders, and Union ministers for their assistance. He advised travelers to Russia to be fully aware of the country’s laws and regulations to avoid similar situations.
