Sultanpur: A 24-year-old woman, Anshika Upadhyay, died following childbirth at the district women’s hospital in Sultanpur, prompting allegations of medical negligence and staff misbehaviour from her family, police said on Friday.
Admission and Delivery
According to her mother, Urmila Upadhyay, Anshika was admitted to the hospital on Thursday for delivery and was reportedly in normal condition. She delivered a baby via cesarean section at 6.24 pm. However, the family alleged that she was left unattended for several hours post-surgery.
Delayed Care
The family claimed that stitches were applied only around 9.30 pm and Anshika was shifted to the ward at 10.30 pm. Later, she reportedly complained of severe cold and shivering, but doctors allegedly only checked her blood pressure without providing further treatment.
Deteriorating Condition
Around 4.30 am on Friday, when Anshika began gasping for breath, doctors reportedly advised the family to shift her to another facility. Urmila alleged that the hospital staff failed to provide timely medical attention, contributing to her daughter’s death.
Alleged Misbehaviour by Staff
The family accused women doctors and hospital staff of misbehaviour, claiming they were surrounded and assaulted when attempting to record a video of the incident. They alleged that staff tried to snatch their mobile phones during the confrontation.
Postmortem Controversy
Urmila also stated that the hospital sent Anshika’s body for postmortem examination without informing the family. She asserted that her daughter had no pre-existing illness or exposure to poison, blaming the death solely on medical negligence.
Hospital Response
Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. R K Yadav confirmed that the matter is under investigation and stated that the actual cause of death will only be determined after the postmortem report is received.
Police Intervention
Station House Officer Dheeraj Kumar of Kotwali Nagar police station visited the hospital with personnel to pacify the aggrieved family. He assured them that a swift investigation would be conducted into the incident.
