Veteran academic leader from Christian Medical College Ludhiana honoured for transforming competency-based medical education in India

Hyderabad: Dr Dinesh K Badyal, Professor and Head of Pharmacology and Vice Principal (Medical Education) at Christian Medical College Ludhiana, has been conferred with the prestigious “Best Medical Education Excellence” award at the national finale of the Indian Medical Awards held in Hyderabad.

With over 28 years of experience spanning teaching, research, and academic leadership, Dr Badyal has played a pivotal role in shaping modern medical education in India. The award recognises his sustained contributions to improving the quality of training for future healthcare professionals.

Key Role in Competency-Based Medical Curriculum

Dr Badyal has been instrumental in developing the competency-based MBBS Pharmacology curriculum as Chairman of the expert group under the National Medical Commission. He also served as Convener for the MD Pharmacology curriculum, helping standardise postgraduate medical education.

He currently leads multiple national initiatives, including serving as Program Director at the CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute and Convener of the NMC Nodal Centre for Faculty Development at CMC Ludhiana. Through these roles, he has trained thousands of faculty members across India, significantly strengthening academic standards.

Recognition by National Academy of Medical Sciences

Adding to his achievements, Dr Badyal has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The honour was conferred during its 65th convocation held at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, acknowledging his excellence in academics and research.

Extensive Research and Academic Contributions

Dr Badyal serves as Editor-in-Chief of the National Journal of Pharmacology & Therapeutics and has an impressive academic portfolio, including over 190 research publications, four authored books, and contributions to several academic volumes.

His previous recognitions include a visiting fellowship at Jefferson University, Philadelphia, a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service, and prestigious orations such as the Dr APJ Kalam Memorial Oration by KGMU Lucknow and the Prof. G. Achari Oration by the Indian Pharmacological Society.

Focus on Building Competent Healthcare Professionals

Speaking after receiving the award, Dr Badyal emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in improving medical education.

“We have been working for more than two decades to enhance the curriculum so that doctors entering the field receive better training. Through strong national and international networks, our aim is to produce competent doctors who serve the community and humanity effectively,” he said.
