Sexual exploitation and forced conversion case widens to alleged terror links
Lucknow: The resident doctor who was recently barred from continuing his medical course at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) and arrested a few days ago has now been linked to one of the accused in the 10/11 Delhi car blast near the Red Fort, which had claimed several lives and left many injured.
Initial Charges of Exploitation and Conversion
The doctor was initially arrested on charges of allegedly sexually exploiting a woman doctor under the pretext of marriage and pressuring her to forcibly convert her religion. The case had already triggered widespread outrage within the medical fraternity and beyond.
Fresh Allegations During Investigation
During the ongoing investigation, police flagged fresh allegations, pointing to the doctor’s alleged links with an accused in last year’s Delhi blast case as well as the banned Islamic outfit Popular Front of India (PFI), significantly escalating the gravity of the matter.
Contacts Through Seminars and Calls
According to Deccan Chronicle sources, the doctor allegedly came in contact with the accused after meeting her at seminars and conferences. Police claim the two later remained in regular telephonic contact, and the accused woman was reportedly part of a so-called “white-collar” terror module.
Arrest and Interrogation Revelations
A joint team of the West Lucknow Surveillance Unit and Chowk Police had arrested the absconding doctor, who was carrying a reward of ₹50,000. During interrogation, police alleged that he sought legal help from PFI while on the run and admitted to considering fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik as his ideal.
Victim Doctor’s Suicide Attempt
The case emerged after the affected woman doctor, who stated that she is Hindu, accused her Muslim colleague of emotional exploitation and coercion to convert to Islam for marriage. She alleged continued harassment after refusing to convert, which led to severe mental distress and an alleged suicide attempt on December 27 inside her KGMU hostel room.
Past Marriage Raises More Questions
It has also come to light that the accused doctor reportedly married a batchmate in February this year after she allegedly converted her religion. Both were studying at Agra Medical College at the time, adding further complexity to the investigation.
Case Handed Over to STF
KGMU’s fact-finding and Vishakha Committee found the doctor guilty of the charges and barred him from the campus. Following a meeting between Vice-Chancellor Dr Soniya Nityanand and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the case was handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF). The STF has begun its probe, and the university’s internal inquiry committee has been dissolved.
