Alleged Medical Negligence Sparks Probe

Indore: In a shocking incident of alleged medical negligence, the thumb of a one-and-a-half-year-old child was reportedly severed at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College, Indore, while a nurse was removing a paediatric cannula from the infant’s hand. Hospital authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter.

Incident During IV Line Removal

According to reports, the incident occurred on December 24 after the child, a resident of Betma, was admitted to MGM Medical College with pneumonia. The infant was admitted to the chest ward and an intravenous (IV) line was inserted as part of the treatment. The child’s mother alleged that the baby’s hand had swollen overnight due to the IV line.

Mother Alleges Delay and Carelessness

Speaking to ETV Bharat, the mother claimed that despite repeatedly calling nurses to address the swelling, no one responded promptly. When a nurse finally arrived to change the IV line, she allegedly used scissors to cut the adhesive tape securing the cannula and accidentally chopped off the child’s thumb in the process.

Immediate Action and Emergency Surgery

The incident triggered panic in the ward, prompting hospital authorities to intervene. Specialists were alerted immediately, and the child was referred to a super-speciality hospital. Doctors at MGM Medical College performed emergency surgery to reattach the severed thumb. Hospital officials confirmed that the surgery was successful and that the infant is currently in a stable condition.

Nurse Suspended, Inquiry Ordered

Following the incident, the accused nursing officer was suspended, and the salaries of three other nurses on duty were withheld for one month. MGM Medical College Dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria stated that a departmental inquiry committee has been constituted to submit a report within 24 hours, adding that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
