Guwahati:
Dr Nomal Chandra Borah, founder of the GNRC Universal Health Mission and the GNRC Group of Hospitals, has been conferred with two prestigious national Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of his outstanding contributions to neurology, nursing leadership, and community healthcare spanning more than five decades.

The honours were awarded by the Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN) and the Association of Nurse Executive–India (ANEI)—two apex national professional bodies representing neurologists and senior nursing leaders respectively.

IAN Hails Borah’s Contribution to Neurology

Commending Dr Borah’s extensive research, prolific academic publications, and his role as a mentor and social entrepreneur, the Indian Academy of Neurology described his life journey as “monumental for Assam and the nation.” The citation highlighted his grit, integrity, and perseverance in establishing Assam’s first comprehensive neuroscience centre and expanding neurological services to previously underserved populations.

Rising from humble beginnings, Dr Borah went on to become one of India’s most respected neurologists, inspiring generations of medical professionals through his work in clinical excellence and public service.

ANEI Recognises Leadership in Nursing and Social Reform

The ANEI Lifetime Achievement Award—among the highest recognitions in Indian nursing leadership—lauded Dr Borah as a visionary healthcare leader and social reformer. The citation highlighted initiatives such as GNRC Medireach, Swasthya Mitra, and the Universal Health Mission, which aim to provide affordable and accessible healthcare to rural and marginalized communities.

Special mention was made of his role in establishing the Asian Institute of Nursing Education (AINE) in 2004, which has since emerged as a premier institution for nursing education, leadership training, and governance in India.

“Dedicated to Patients and Healthcare Workers”

Accepting the honours, Dr Borah dedicated the awards to his patients and their families, mentors, colleagues, students, and the entire GNRC fraternity.
“I remain committed to making healthcare more ethical, equitable, and accessible for all,” he said.

GNRC’s Journey and Legacy

Founded by Dr Borah in 1985 as the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre, GNRC has grown into a leading chain of tertiary-care super-speciality hospitals across Assam and West Bengal, playing a pivotal role in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in eastern India.

Previous National Recognitions

Dr Borah has received several prestigious accolades earlier, including the Mitali Bhuyan Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award (2023), the Lakshminarayan Award (2022), and the Double Helical National Health Award (2017), recognising his sustained efforts in delivering affordable and ethical healthcare.
