Student-led global initiative aims to strengthen research and awareness on AMR
Bhubaneswar: The Global Association of Indian Medical Students (GAIMS) has announced the launch of a Special Edition on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) under its GAIMS-AXIS initiative, reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence, student-led research, and community-driven medical scholarship.
Understanding Antimicrobial Resistance
Antimicrobial resistance occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist medicines designed to eliminate them. This makes infections harder to treat, increases the risk of severe illness and death, and places a significant financial burden on healthcare systems worldwide.
Editorial Leadership for the Special Edition
The Special Edition is being led by an editorial team comprising Dr. Dattareya Mukherjee, Dr. Prakhar Bajpai, and Dr. Abhishek Kashyap. The editors bring together strong academic, clinical, and organisational expertise to address AMR, widely regarded as one of the most critical public health challenges of the present era.
Vision Behind GAIMS
GAIMS was founded under the vision of Dr. Shubham Anand, Chairman, GAIMS, with the objective of fostering academic excellence, encouraging student-led research, and promoting community-oriented initiatives among Indian medical students on a global platform.
Formal Launch by Renowned Virologist
The Special Edition on Antimicrobial Resistance was formally launched by Dr. Priya Abraham, former Director of the ICMR–National Institute of Virology. Dr. Abraham is internationally recognised for leading the team that isolated India’s first live COVID-19 virus, a breakthrough that contributed significantly to the development of India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, COVAXIN.
Distinguished Guests at the Event
The launch event was further graced by Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI). National Award-winning filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri and acclaimed actress Pallavi Joshi, who portrayed Dr. Priya Abraham in The Vaccine War, were also present, highlighting the convergence of science, public health, and public engagement.
