Doctor Caught Red-Handed for Issuing Favourable Report to Private Medical College
New Delhi: In a major crackdown on corruption in the medical education sector, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior doctor associated with the National Medical Commission (NMC) for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh in exchange for a favourable inspection report for a private medical college in Belgavi, Karnataka.
The accused has been identified as Dr. Tapan Kumar, Head of the Anatomy Department at Murshidabad Medical College. He was apprehended in Kolkata during a sting operation carried out by the CBI, in which he was caught red-handed receiving the bribe.
Massive Recovery During Multi-City Raids
Following the arrest, the CBI conducted extensive searches at multiple locations linked to Dr. Kumar and others — including Kolkata, Bardhaman (Burdwan), and Belgaum. The raids resulted in the seizure of ₹44.6 lakh in additional cash, besides incriminating documents, jewellery, and other materials. The total amount recovered stands at ₹54.6 lakh.
CBI Statement Confirms Corruption Charges
In an official statement, the CBI said, “The accused senior doctor, working as an assessor with the NMC, was arrested immediately after receiving a bribe of ₹10 lakh from private individuals representing a medical college in Belgavi. Additional searches led to the recovery of approximately ₹44.6 lakh in cash and incriminating materials.”
Searches Linked to Government Medic in Bardhaman
The anti-corruption wing of the CBI, along with the local police, also raided the house of a senior government doctor in Bardhaman, where further evidence was seized. The raid lasted from Saturday night to early Sunday morning, indicating the scale and seriousness of the operation.
Further Legal Action Underway
The arrested doctor is expected to be produced before a competent court soon, and the investigation remains ongoing, the CBI confirmed.
This arrest raises serious concerns about corruption within regulatory bodies, particularly those overseeing medical education and college accreditations.
