Protests erupt at hospital as kin demand accountability and probe
Puri: A 38-year-old woman died at the Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Monday, two days after undergoing a Caesarean section, triggering protests by her family and local residents. Hundreds of people gathered at the hospital premises, alleging medical negligence and demanding justice.
Admitted for Delivery
The woman was admitted to the maternity ward of DHH on January 10 for delivery and later gave birth to a baby boy through a C-section. After the procedure, she was shifted to a general bed along with her newborn and was reportedly under observation.
Family Alleges Fall and Neglect
According to family members, the woman fell from her bed on Sunday and lost consciousness. They alleged that despite repeatedly informing hospital staff, no immediate medical assistance was provided, and her condition was ignored for a considerable period.
Kin Carry Patient to Operation Theatre
The family further claimed that in the absence of hospital attendants and a stretcher, they were forced to carry the unconscious woman themselves to the operation theatre. Doctors reportedly declared her dead nearly half an hour after she was brought there.
Allegations of Coercion
The victim’s father alleged that hospital staff asked him to sign a blank paper stating that his daughter’s condition was serious, which he refused. He demanded clarity on the cause of death and accountability from those responsible before accepting the body.
Hospital’s Response
Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Akshaya Satpathy termed the incident “unfortunate.” He said the woman had previously delivered one child and had a history of three miscarriages. “She was stable after surgery and kept under observation. Preliminary reports suggest she fell while sitting on the bed and may have suffered a heart attack. A detailed investigation will be conducted,” he said.
Police Step In
Kumbharpara police reached the hospital to manage the situation and tried to pacify the grieving family, according to reports. The protest, however, continued as emotions ran high.
Demand for Thorough Inquiry
Unconvinced by the hospital’s explanation, the family has demanded a comprehensive and transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, alleging serious lapses in post-operative care at the government hospital.
