Doctor caught intoxicated while attending OPD patients

A doctor from the Government Thoothukudi Medical College and Hospital has been suspended after being found under the influence of alcohol while on duty in the Outpatient Department (OPD).
The doctor, identified as Dr. Kannan, was reportedly intoxicated while attending to patients on Thursday morning. The incident came to light after a member of the public recorded a video of the inebriated doctor and shared it on social media, prompting public outrage.
Hospital Issues Notice, Inquiry Conducted
Following the video’s circulation, the hospital administration issued a notice to Dr. Kannan seeking an explanation for his conduct. A formal inquiry was subsequently launched to probe the matter.
Suspension Ordered by Director of Medical Education
Based on the findings of the inquiry, Director of Medical Education J. Sangumani issued a suspension order against Dr. Kannan on Friday, confirmed Silas Jeyamani, the Resident Medical Officer of the hospital.
The incident has raised serious concerns about professional conduct within government healthcare institutions and the need for stricter monitoring mechanisms.
