Dr Vishal Akula, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Government Medical College (GMC), Nizamabad, has been selected for the prestigious Dr Ketan Desai Aao Gaon Chalen Award (Rural Services) by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to rural healthcare and community mental health services.

The award will be presented during the National Doctors’ Day Awards Ceremony on July 18 at the Constitution Club of India, in the presence of the IMA’s national leadership.

Recognised for Rural Mental Healthcare and De-Addiction Services

A senior neuropsychiatrist and specialist in drug de-addiction, Dr Vishal Akula has been chosen for the national honour for his sustained efforts in improving rural healthcare delivery, strengthening community mental health services, promoting de-addiction programmes and creating public awareness on mental health issues.

The award also acknowledges his long-standing commitment to serving underserved communities through accessible, patient-centric psychiatric care and public health initiatives.

IPS Telangana President-Elect Expresses Gratitude

Dr Akula, who was recently elected President-Elect of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), Telangana State Branch, expressed gratitude to his colleagues, mentors and members of the psychiatric fraternity for their support.

He thanked the members of the IPS Telangana State Branch, his teachers, mentors, colleagues, friends and well-wishers for their encouragement and confidence, stating that he was honoured to contribute to the advancement of psychiatry and mental healthcare in Telangana.

He also expressed his appreciation to the state and national leadership of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for conferring the prestigious national award.

Dedicates Honour to Patients and Healthcare Professionals

Dr Akula shared the recognition with his patients, colleagues, students and healthcare workers serving in rural areas, acknowledging their tireless efforts in delivering quality healthcare.

Reaffirming his commitment to public service, he said he would continue working towards providing compassionate, evidence-based mental healthcare while developing healthcare programmes that address the specific needs of local communities.

Prestigious National Recognition

The Dr Ketan Desai Aao Gaon Chalen Award (Rural Services) is one of the Indian Medical Association’s notable honours recognising doctors who have made exceptional contributions to healthcare in rural and underserved regions of the country.

Last year, the award was presented to Dr Bharat M. Soni for his contribution to rural medical services.

The Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), founded in 1947, is India’s oldest and largest professional organisation representing psychiatrists. The society works to promote mental health awareness, encourage psychiatric research, improve clinical standards and strengthen mental healthcare services across the country.

The recognition of Dr Vishal Akula highlights the growing importance of mental health services in rural India and acknowledges the role of dedicated healthcare professionals in expanding access to psychiatric care beyond urban centres.
