Lakhbir Singh Landa of Babbar Khalsa named in FIR; doctor remains critical after attack in Moga

Ludhiana (Punjab) – In a chilling act of violence, a doctor was shot twice in the chest by assailants posing as patients at his private nursing home in Moga district. Police have named designated terrorist Lakhbir Singh alias Landa Harike, associated with the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), as the key conspirator behind the attack.

The incident occurred at Harbans Nursing Home in Kot Ise Khan, where Dr Aniljit Kamboj was attending to patients. Two men arrived under the pretense of seeking treatment. While one distracted the doctor during consultation, the other opened fire at close range, hitting Dr Kamboj with two bullets, one of which penetrated his chest.

Dr Kamboj remains in critical condition and is on ventilator support at a private hospital.

Mastermind Linked to Terror Activities

According to the Moga police, Lakhbir Singh Landa, currently believed to be hiding in Canada, orchestrated the attack. The Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier designated the 33-year-old Canada-based gangster as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Landa is known for his involvement in multiple terror incidents, including the 2021 rocket-propelled grenade attack on Punjab Police’s Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali.

Previous Threats and Extortion Attempt

Dr Kamboj had been granted police security in 2022 after receiving extortion threats from Landa, who demanded ₹1 crore and threatened the doctor’s life. However, the security cover was recently withdrawn after no fresh threats were reported.

Arrest Made in Weapon Supply

At a press briefing, DSP Ramandeep Singh of Dharamkot confirmed that Landa has been named in the FIR filed at Kot Ise Khan police station under attempt to murder charges. In a breakthrough, the police also arrested one of Landa’s associates, identified as Harmeet Singh alias Meetu (25) from Talwandi Shobha Singh village in Tarn Taran district, for allegedly supplying weapons to the shooters.

“The attackers were selected by Landa, and weapons were arranged through Meetu. More arrests may follow as the investigation progresses,” said DSP Singh.

Pattern of Threats Against Doctors

This attack underscores growing concerns over security threats to doctors, especially those previously targeted for extortion by gangsters and terrorist groups operating from abroad.
