A shocking extortion attempt targeting a prominent paediatrician in Patna has led to the arrest of a suspect, raising fresh concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals in India.

Accused Arrested from Ramakrishnanagar After Threat Calls

The Patna Police arrested the accused from Ramakrishnanagar on Friday after tracing multiple threatening calls demanding ₹10 lakh from a well-known doctor.

According to officials, two mobile phones and two SIM cards were recovered from the accused during the operation. He is currently being interrogated to ascertain whether he acted independently or was part of a larger extortion network.

Threat Calls Began on March 30

As per Purvi Parichay Kumar, City SP (East), the incident began on March 30 when the paediatrician, who runs a hospital in Mithapur, received repeated calls demanding money.

Following the complaint, a special investigation team was immediately constituted to track down the culprit.

Mobile Tracking Led to Arrest

During the investigation, the police traced the calls to a SIM card registered in the accused’s name, a resident of Sakrapura village in Nawada district.

When initial searches in his native village failed, the police used mobile location tracking to zero in on his whereabouts. He was eventually located in a rented accommodation in Ramakrishnanagar and arrested.

Possibility of Larger Conspiracy Under Investigation

Police officials suspect that the accused may not have acted alone. Investigators are probing whether the extortion attempt was orchestrated by another individual or criminal group.

“The role of other persons is being examined,” said the City SP, indicating that further arrests could follow.

Rising Threats to Doctors Raise Safety Concerns

The incident highlights a growing pattern of threats and extortion attempts against medical professionals, sparking concerns about their safety and security.

In a similar case reported earlier, a doctor in Nashik was allegedly targeted in an extortion racket involving a history-sheeter and an accomplice, underscoring the vulnerability of healthcare providers.

Need for Stronger Protection Measures

Experts believe such incidents call for:

  • Enhanced security measures at hospitals
  • Faster police response systems
  • Strict legal action against extortionists
  • Greater awareness among doctors to report threats immediately

Conclusion

The swift action by police in this case has prevented potential harm, but the incident serves as a reminder of the increasing risks faced by doctors. Strengthening security frameworks and ensuring strict enforcement of law will be crucial to safeguarding healthcare professionals across the country.
