New Delhi – Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH)  in New Delhi successfully used a holmium laser to remove a lodged denture from a patient’s upper oesophagus on April 3, 2026. The patient, suffering from severe respiratory distress after swallowing the plate, was treated using a precise, non-invasive endoscopic technique that prevented the need for major surgery.

Key Aspects of the Procedure:

  • The Challenge: Sharp, embedded metal clasps made traditional forceps removal risky.
  • The Procedure: Led by Prof. Anil Arora and Dr. Shrihari Anikhindi, the team used the laser to break the denture into manageable fragments.
  • Safety Measures: A protective overtube was employed to prevent tissue damage during extraction.
  • Outcome: The patient recovered well and avoided high-risk open surgery.
