Posing as officers, fraudsters flee with cash and gold worth lakhs; police launch manhunt
Kendrapara (Odisha) – In a shocking case of deception, an 80-year-old retired doctor, Dr Jalil Ahamad Khan, was duped by six miscreants posing as vigilance officials, who conducted a fake raid at his residence in Oldhi village, and fled with cash, gold ornaments, and valuables, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday, when the fraudsters forced their way into Dr Khan’s home, claiming to be vigilance wing officers conducting a search for disproportionate assets. They presented forged identification documents to make the raid appear authentic.
A Retired Physician Serving the Rural Community
Dr Khan, who had earlier served as a physician at a government medical college in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, has been living in his native village for the past 20 years, providing medical care to the local population.
According to the police, the imposters searched his home for nearly an hour, during which they took away ₹1.5 lakh in cash and around 500 grams of gold ornaments.
Before leaving, the fraudsters instructed Dr Khan to appear at the Kendrapara district vigilance office with documentation to justify the source of his assets. However, upon reaching the office, he was shocked to discover that no such raid had been conducted, confirming he had been the victim of a well-orchestrated scam.
Police Action Underway
Speaking to the media, Inspector-in-Charge Ambika Das of Derabish Police Station said a special squad has been formed to track down the culprits and bring them to justice.
“We have launched a full-scale investigation and are examining leads to identify and apprehend the accused,” said Das.
Doctors Targeted in Growing Fraud Trend
This case adds to a growing trend of fraudulent schemes targeting doctors. As previously reported by Medical Dialogues, a Mangaluru-based doctor lost ₹4.2 lakh after falling prey to an online job scam promising a lucrative medical position in Dubai.
Such incidents highlight the need for greater awareness and verification protocols, especially among elderly citizens and professionals.
