Surat: The Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has suspended the medical registration of Dr. Mahesh T. Navadiya of Maruti Multispeciality Hospital, Surat, for six months following an inquiry into allegations of misrepresentation of his qualifications. The action was based on a complaint filed by a patient’s family, as stated in an official order issued on Thursday.

According to the GMC’s order, based on a resolution by its Executive Committee dated November 12, Dr. Navadiya falsely claimed to hold an MD degree in modern medicine despite possessing only an MBBS degree. Additionally, he was found to have a “Master Diploma in Alternative Medicine” covering practices like acupressure, magnet therapy, Sujok, pyramid healing, and Reiki, which are not recognized as medical qualifications under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. This diploma does not qualify him as an emergency or ICU specialist.

The inquiry revealed that Dr. Navadiya misled authorities, including the police, and the public into believing he held a valid master’s degree in modern medicine. The GMC deemed this act as “serious misconduct” under Section 22(1)(c) of the Gujarat Medical Council Act, read with the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette, and Ethics) Regulations, 2002.

Dr. Navadiya completed his MBBS from Ningxia Medical University, China. The GMC’s General Body approved the suspension of his registration, effective from January 29, 2025, to July 28, 2025.

Additionally, the GMC recommended that the Gujarat Council of Homeopathic System of Medicine take appropriate action against homeopathic doctor Ghanshyam Sugahia (Patel). It also urged the Surat Municipal Commissioner to act against Maruti Multispeciality Hospital for employing a doctor without proper qualifications in either allopathic or homeopathic medicine for patient treatment.
