Incident Overview
A newborn was abducted from the maternity ward of Bundelkhand Medical College (BMC), Sagar, on Thursday morning, creating panic among hospital staff and the infant’s family. The baby’s mother had delivered on August 10. The abduction was captured on CCTV, showing a woman in a red saree calmly walking out of the ward with the baby.

Immediate Response and Recovery
Authorities acted swiftly:

  • CCTV footage helped identify the suspect.
  • A district-wide alert was issued.
  • Police teams checked bus stands, railway stations, and public transport hubs.

The infant was recovered safely near Karrapur from two women, including a 70-year-old, residents of Shahgarh. The newborn was returned to the hospital and admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) for observation. Doctors confirmed the baby is in good health and reunited with the mother.

Investigation and Security Measures
Police are questioning the women to determine motives and potential links to past child-lifting incidents in the region. In response to the security lapse, BMC:

  • Formed a three-member inquiry committee.
  • Suspended the on-duty security guard for 15 days, reports TOI.

Hospital and Family Response
The mother noticed her baby missing only after the suspect left, prompting her to alert family members. Initially, some hospital staff denied any abduction, causing tensions. A bystander attempting to document the incident was assaulted and removed by hospital personnel.
