Jaipur, Oct 2 (PTI): The Rajasthan Health Department has confirmed that recent deaths of children in Bharatpur and Sikar districts were not linked to the state’s free cough syrup scheme.

Investigation Findings: Public Health Director Ravi Prakash Sharma stated that inquiries revealed the children had been administered the syrup at home without a doctor’s prescription.

Drug Protocols: The syrup contained Dextromethorphan (DXM), a drug not recommended for children. In both incidents, doctors had not prescribed the medication, Sharma added.

Government Action: Following media reports about poor-quality cough syrup, Health Minister Gajendra Singh ordered an official probe into the matter.

Supply Halted: The Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited (RMSCL) immediately suspended the distribution and use of the syrup, formed a three-member inquiry committee, and sent samples for testing at the state drug laboratory.

Sikar Case: In a separate incident in Sikar, a child was prescribed a DXM-containing syrup incorrectly. The Health Department has initiated suspension proceedings against the doctor and pharmacist involved for violating medical protocols.

Public Advisory: The Health Department has urged doctors to adhere strictly to prescription guidelines and warned the public against taking medicines without medical advice.
