Kolkata — The grieving parents of the young doctor who was raped and murdered while on duty at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024 have voiced strong dissatisfaction with the CBI’s investigation into the case, alleging that it was neither thorough nor transparent.
“We are unhappy with how the CBI has probed the case. We do not think their investigation was fair or accurate,” the victim’s father told The Hindu on Saturday.
‘Only One Person Named, But We Believe More Were Involved’
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the case in August 2024, filed a chargesheet on October 7, 2024, naming only former civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2025.
But the victim’s family insists that a larger conspiracy is being overlooked.
“We believe more people were involved. We will not rest till the truth comes out,” the father added.
The family has now appointed senior advocate Phiroze Edulji to represent them in court, replacing their previous legal counsel.
CBI Accused of Neglect, No Supplementary Chargesheet Filed
The victim’s parents have alleged lapses in procedure, stating that no supplementary chargesheet has been filed since October 2024 and that CBI officials have ceased communication with them since November.
“The last time we spoke, they just asked us to be patient,” the father said, adding that repeated appeals to meet the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and President have gone unanswered.
Calcutta High Court Hearing Scheduled for June 30
In March 2025, the Calcutta High Court asked the CBI whether it had adequately considered the possibility of multiple perpetrators in the case. The CBI maintained, based on a board of medical experts, that the incident did not qualify as gang rape.
The case remains pending before the Calcutta High Court, with the next hearing set for June 30.
Doctors’ Forum Intensifies Protest
In solidarity, a group of doctors under the banner of Abhaya Mancha continues to protest monthly.
“We protest on the 9th of every month — she was murdered on August 9,” said Dr. Subarna Goswami, a representative of the forum.
“This month, we will march to Tala Police Station on June 9.”
The FIR was registered at Tala Police Station, and the station’s then Officer-in-Charge, Abhijit Mondal, was accused of misleading the initial investigation, taken into custody by the CBI, and later suspended.
As the family seeks accountability, transparency, and justice, the case continues to spark political, legal, and civil outrage in West Bengal and beyond.
