Inaugurates Rs 750-Crore Hospital, Unveils Vajpayee Statue, and Celebrates Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee
GANGTOK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of Sikkim’s statehood, marking 50 years since the state joined the Indian Union in 1975. Despite adverse weather conditions preventing his physical presence, the Prime Minister unveiled a series of landmark projects aimed at strengthening Sikkim’s infrastructure, healthcare, and tourism.
Healthcare Boost with 500-Bed Hospital in Namchi
Among the major announcements, PM Modi launched a 500-bed district hospital in Namchi, built at a cost of ₹750 crore, a significant step toward enhancing the healthcare facilities in South Sikkim.
Tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee
In a moment of remembrance, the Prime Minister unveiled a statue of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the newly established Atal Amrit Udyan in Gangtok. The tribute recognizes Vajpayee’s lasting contributions to the nation and his vision for the North East.
Commemorative Releases to Mark 50 Years of Statehood
To celebrate the state’s 50-year journey, PM Modi released a commemorative coin, a souvenir coin, and a postal stamp that highlight Sikkim’s unique cultural identity and historic significance.
Tourism Push with New Ropeway
The Prime Minister also inaugurated a passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling in Pelling, Gyalshing district, expected to boost tourism and improve connectivity in the region.
PM Lauds Sikkim’s Democratic Spirit and Progress
Speaking virtually, PM Modi praised the people of Sikkim for their unwavering commitment to democracy since joining India in 1975. “With its distinct geography, the people of Sikkim wholeheartedly embraced the spirit of India. They believed that when every voice is valued and every right safeguarded, it paves the way for equal opportunities and progress,” he said.
North East Central to India’s Development Vision
Reiterating his government’s focus on inclusive development, the Prime Minister said, “When I assumed office in 2014, I introduced the slogan ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. To build a developed India, it is essential to ensure balanced progress across all states and regions. That’s why our government has placed the North East at the heart of our development agenda.”
Future Visit Assured
While addressing the people of Sikkim virtually, PM Modi expressed his admiration for the state’s achievements and assured citizens that he would visit the region in person at a later date.
The 50th Statehood Day celebrations marked both a reflection on Sikkim’s transformative journey and a promise of continued support from the Centre for its development aspirations.
