Chandigarh:
The Chandigarh Police have registered an FIR after a junior resident doctor at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) was allegedly assaulted by attendants of a patient’s baby in the Neonatology Intensive Care Unit (NNN-ICU) on Thursday afternoon.

In an official statement issued Friday, PGIMER confirmed the incident, calling it a shocking act of violence that endangers healthcare professionals and disrupts the caregiving environment.

Immediate Response from Doctors’ Association

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) said it is deeply anguished by the assault. ARD representatives reached the scene swiftly to support their colleague and to ensure legal action was initiated without delay.

A formal complaint was filed, and an FIR was registered within hours, the ARD confirmed. The matter was escalated to PGIMER Director Prof. Vivek Lal, who assured the ARD of firm and timely action against those responsible.

Calls for Enhanced Security Measures

ARD president Dr Vishnu Jinja strongly condemned the incident and demanded multiple security upgrades across the PGIMER campus.
“This kind of violence cannot and will not be tolerated in a healthcare setup. Doctors are here to heal, not to be hurt. The safety of every healthcare worker is non-negotiable,” Dr Jinja said.

He added that the hospital security department has been instructed to conduct a comprehensive investigation and implement preventive protocols to avoid future incidents.

Solidarity and Zero Tolerance

Dr Jinja emphasized the ARD’s unwavering commitment to the protection and dignity of all healthcare professionals and urged all stakeholders to remain united against violence in medical institutions.
