Rayagada, January 3, 2026: In a disturbing case of cyber fraud, an Additional District Public Health Officer in Rayagada district, Odisha, reportedly lost over ₹12 lakh after fraudsters held her under “digital arrest” for two days.

Fraudsters Impersonated Authorities
The doctor was coerced into transferring the money after being repeatedly threatened by fraudsters posing as police officers and courier officials. She was warned of arrest if she failed to comply, causing immense fear and confusion.

Initial Contact Through Courier Scam Call
Police reports revealed that the scam began when the doctor received a call from an unknown individual claiming to be from a courier company. She was told that a suspicious parcel linked to her Aadhaar card had been detected and that serious charges had been filed against her.

Escalation by Fake Police Officers
The caller later handed the conversation to another person claiming to be a police officer. The fraudsters instructed her not to leave her house until a verification process was completed and repeatedly warned of grave consequences for non-compliance.

Victim Trapped by Intimidation
Under continuous intimidation, the doctor believed she was under official surveillance. Taking advantage of her fear, the cybercriminals successfully duped her of more than ₹12 lakh during this period.

Complaint and Investigation
Following the incident, the doctor filed a complaint with the Rayagada police station and the cyber cell. Based on her report, authorities have registered a case and launched an investigation into the cyber fraud, according to Sambad.

Rising Threat to Medical Professionals
Cyber fraud targeting doctors is on the rise, with scammers increasingly using fear, threats, and impersonation of law enforcement to extort money. Medical professionals are among the vulnerable groups frequently targeted in such schemes.

Police Advisory to Public
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and not succumb to threatening calls claiming to be from law enforcement or courier services. Citizens are advised to verify any suspicious communication before taking action to avoid falling prey to cyber fraudsters.
