Mumbai — Senior Inspector Ravindra Katkar of Worli Police Station has been suspended for failing to follow proper protocol in the arrest of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Atul Wankhede, who is associated with Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital and other institutions.
The suspension was confirmed by DCP Dattatray Kamble, who said that Katkar did not brief his superiors before registering the FIR and making the arrest — a direct violation of departmental procedures. A departmental inquiry has been initiated.
Dr. Atul Wankhede was arrested on April 25 following a complaint filed by a 24-year-old delivery executive, Avinash Saminder. The FIR alleges that Wankhede gave negligent medical advice in November 2024, worsening the complainant’s spinal condition. He is also accused of using forged documents and possessing a fake medical degree.
Wankhede has been booked under several sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- 351(2): Criminal intimidation
- 340(2): Fraudulent use of forged documents
- 339: Possession of forged documents
- 316(2): Criminal breach of trust
The charges extend beyond medical negligence, including allegations of identity fraud involving the use of multiple government-issued IDs obtained under false pretenses.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Katkar’s failure to inform his superiors before registering the FIR and executing the arrest has drawn internal scrutiny. His suspension underscores the importance of maintaining procedural transparency in high-profile cases.
