Kolkata: A minor fire broke out at the Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon, causing brief panic on the campus. According to officials, the fire was detected around 1 PM at a garbage dump near the Green Building of the hospital, located on College Street.

Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been sparked by burning cigarette stubs, reports PTI.

Two fire engines were rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control within 30 minutes. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.

Though the fire was small in scale, the incident led to panic among patients, staff, and visitors, given the sensitive nature of the healthcare setting.

The incident echoes similar recent concerns about fire safety in hospitals. We  had earlier reported a fire at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where a blaze in the orthopaedics block—caused by an electrical panel malfunction—was swiftly controlled without casualties.

Authorities are expected to review safety measures at the Kolkata facility to prevent such incidents in the future.
