Assistant Professor at RMLIMS Targeted

Lucknow: A 32-year-old assistant professor in the urology department at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Lucknow, endured months of harassment from a former patient who sent her thousands of obscene messages and calls daily before turning up at her residence.

Harassment Started After Treatment

The accused, 41-year-old Mahesh Tiwari from Basti district, allegedly obtained the doctor’s number during treatment at the hospital. Initially, his messages appeared courteous but soon turned vulgar and relentless. According to the doctor’s police complaint, she received as many as 5,000 messages and 1,000 calls in a single day.

Early Complaint to Women’s Helpline

On May 12, when the harassment became unbearable, the doctor approached the 1090 Women’s Power Line. Authorities warned Tiwari but did not take further action. He remained silent briefly before resuming the harassment.

Stalking at Her Residence

The situation escalated when the accused began stalking the doctor at her OPD and residence. On August 19, he allegedly followed her to the faculty apartment block at RMLIMS. “When I was waiting for the lift, I saw him standing behind me. I screamed, and he tried to flee, but guards caught him and handed him over to the police,” the doctor stated in her FIR.

Police Action Taken

On August 21, police arrested Tiwari under Section 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2008. He has since been sent to jail.

Doctor’s Ordeal

Recounting her experience, the doctor said, “He would not stop. My phone didn’t stay silent for even a minute. It felt like living inside a horror film… I stopped visiting my apartment alone out of fear. Every time I stepped outside, I felt haunted.”

She added that the constant harassment had left her mentally shaken, and her family feared for her safety. “Sending thousands of messages does not show a stable mental condition. I fear my life is in danger,” she said.
