Doctor Caught with Synthetic Drug

Kochi police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old doctor, Amjad Ahasan, after recovering 0.83 grams of MDMA (a synthetic stimulant drug) from his possession. The arrest was made during a DANSAF (anti-narcotics) operation in Ernakulam North, carried out on the instructions of City Police Commissioner Putta Vimaladitya.

Suspect’s Background

Ahasan, a native of Vadakkekara in North Paravur, had studied medicine in Ukraine, worked as a house surgeon at Ernakulam General Hospital, and was later employed at a private hospital in Kochi. Police said though he resided in Kochi, he frequently travelled back to Vadakkekara after duty hours.

Police Investigation Underway

The operation was led by Narcotics Cell Assistant Commissioner K. A. Abdulsalam. According to police, the seized quantity is less than one gram, which normally qualifies for station bail under the NDPS Act. However, given the involvement of a medical professional, police intend to present Ahasan before the court. Investigators are now working to trace the source of the contraband.

Wider Drug Abuse Concerns in Medical Circles

The arrest adds to growing concerns over medical professionals being linked to drug abuse. Earlier this year, Hyderabad police busted a drug peddling racket, arresting nine people, including a private hospital surgeon. They were caught with around 100 grams of MDMA. Reports suggested that peddlers targeted same-sex groups for selling the drug.

What is MDMA?

MDMA, short for 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, is a synthetic drug with stimulant and mild psychedelic properties. Commonly known as “ecstasy” or “molly,” it is often abused recreationally, raising serious public health concerns.
