Ahmedabad: First confirmed case in the state
Gujarat recorded its first confirmed case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Monday. A two-month-old infant from Dungarpur, Rajasthan, undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ahmedabad, tested positive for the viral infection.
Infant’s condition improves after initial complications
The baby was admitted on December 24 with respiratory issues and placed on a ventilator. After testing positive for HMPV on December 26, her condition has now stabilized, according to Dr. Bhavin Solanki, medical officer of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Delayed reporting sparks controversy
AMC issued a show-cause notice to the hospital in Chandkheda for withholding the diagnosis for 10 days. The corporation is seeking an explanation and may pursue legal action for the delay.
State prepares for diagnosis and treatment
State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel reassured citizens, stating that HMPV, first identified in 2001, is not a new virus and typically affects children and the elderly during winter. He emphasized that there is no need to panic, and testing for HMPV will soon be available in Gujarat.
Nationwide vigilance heightened
With similar cases reported in Bengaluru and rising respiratory illnesses in China, a Joint Monitoring Group meeting, chaired by the Directorate General of Health Services, was held to discuss preparedness. Experts noted that HMPV symptoms resemble those of the common cold and flu and are particularly severe in infants.
Public urged to stay calm
Pediatric infectious diseases specialist Dr. Abhay Shah advised against unnecessary testing or panic. He highlighted the importance of consulting healthcare providers for proper diagnosis and treatment while practicing preventive hygiene to curb infections.
