Statewide initiative to begin from Sankhalim, aims to boost wellness through traditional medicine

The Government of Goa has announced a major public health initiative to organise Ayurveda health camps across the state, marking the birthday of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on April 24. The camps are designed to promote preventive healthcare and encourage citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles rooted in traditional systems of medicine.

Initiative to Begin from Sankhalim

The programme will be launched in Sankhalim and gradually expanded to other regions of Goa in a phased manner. The camps will focus on early detection of health issues, lifestyle guidance, and awareness about Ayurveda’s role in disease prevention.

Focus on Preventive Healthcare

Health Minister Subhash Shirodkar shared details of the initiative on the social media platform X, highlighting the government’s continued focus on public welfare. He noted that the move reflects the Chief Minister’s vision of strengthening healthcare services while promoting holistic well-being.

According to the minister, these camps will not only provide basic consultations but also educate people about Ayurveda’s preventive approach, which emphasises maintaining health rather than treating illness after it occurs.

CM’s Background in Ayurveda

Born on April 24, 1973, in Mapusa, Pramod Sawant is a trained Ayurveda doctor before entering politics. He earned a Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree from Ganga Education Society’s Ayurvedic Medical College in Kolhapur.

His academic journey also includes a Master’s degree in Social Work from Tilak Maharashtra University, reflecting his strong inclination toward community development and public service.

Political Journey and Leadership

A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sawant has represented the Sanquelim constituency in the Goa Legislative Assembly since 2012. He assumed office as Chief Minister in March 2019 and has since focused on strengthening healthcare infrastructure and promoting traditional medicine systems.

Promoting Ayurveda Awareness

The upcoming camps are expected to play a key role in spreading awareness about Ayurveda across Goa, especially in rural areas. By integrating traditional knowledge with modern healthcare outreach, the government aims to build a more preventive and sustainable health ecosystem.

This initiative underscores Goa’s efforts to combine cultural heritage with public health priorities, reinforcing Ayurveda’s relevance in today’s healthcare landscape.
