Lucknow, Special Correspondent: A female resident doctor at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) allegedly attempted suicide after accusing a colleague of pressuring her to convert her religion for marriage. The incident has raised concerns about workplace harassment and emotional abuse in medical institutions.
Allegations of Religious Pressure
According to the complaint, the doctor, a Hindu woman, alleged that her male colleague, belonging to the Muslim community, emotionally exploited her and insisted she convert to Islam to marry him. She claimed that when she refused, the harassment continued, causing severe mental distress.
Family Files Complaints
Following the incident, her father lodged complaints on the Chief Minister’s public grievance portal and with the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission. He alleged that persistent pressure from the colleague led his daughter to attempt suicide.
Suicide Attempt Details
The incident reportedly took place on December 17, when the doctor allegedly consumed a large quantity of medicines inside her hostel room at KGMU. She was immediately rushed to the Trauma Centre and later transferred to the fifth floor of the Critical Care Management (CCM) ICU for advanced treatment.
Current Condition
As per reports, the doctor is currently undergoing treatment at KGMU and her condition is stable. She was initially admitted to the Trauma Centre in critical condition, and medical staff continue to monitor her closely.
Background of Relationship
According to the father’s complaint, the doctor met the accused in July 2025 while both were studying at KGMU. Their friendship reportedly turned into a romantic relationship. The family alleged that the accused trapped their daughter emotionally, and when marriage discussions arose, he pressured her to convert to Islam.
Continued Harassment Alleged
The family further claimed that after she refused to change her religion, the accused ended the relationship but continued to harass her mentally. This ongoing trauma reportedly left the doctor depressed and fearful, contributing to her suicide attempt.
KGMU Response
KGMU spokesperson KK Singh told ANI that the university became aware of the incident through social media. He confirmed that the girl had been under psychiatric treatment and medication, and that the Vice-Chancellor has assured that if a formal complaint is received, all possible actions will be taken to address the matter.
