Chennai – Doctors preparing for NEET-PG and NEET-SS at Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in Guindy are grappling with unsanitary conditions in the campus canteen. Reports indicate overflowing sewage, stray dogs scavenging for food, and poor hygiene standards in the kitchen and dining areas.
Unhygienic Conditions
- The sewage smell greets visitors before they even reach the food counters.
- Food preparation takes place in an open space behind the canteen, worsening hygiene concerns.
- Stray dogs freely roam the dining area, feasting on leftover food.
- Staff members avoid eating at the canteen, preferring to bring food from home or eat elsewhere.
Doctors Express Concern
A NEET-SS aspirant remarked, “Five years ago, conditions were better. Now, stray dogs roam the area, the furniture is worn out, and the entire place is in a mess.”
University’s Response
An official from the university acknowledged previous complaints and stated that inspections were conducted a month ago. The canteen contractor was instructed to maintain cleanliness, and after TNIE raised the issue again, a temporary cover was placed over the open sewage.
Despite this, doctors and students continue to demand immediate and permanent improvements to ensure basic hygiene standards at the canteen.
