Guwahati: Police are investigating the death of a 41-year-old physician who was found unresponsive inside a private super-speciality hospital in Guwahati, with his family alleging that repeated harassment and threats by a woman with whom he had been in a relationship and her husband had affected his mental well-being.
The doctor’s father has filed a complaint against the woman and her husband, alleging repeated phone calls, WhatsApp messages and threats. Police have registered an FIR and are investigating the allegations as well as the circumstances surrounding the physician’s death.
Doctor Found Unresponsive Inside ICU Chamber
The physician had been working at the private hospital for several years and was associated with emergency medicine and ICU services.
According to reports, he was present at the hospital on Tuesday night. In the early hours of Wednesday, he was found unresponsive inside an ICU chamber in the hospital’s new building.
Hospital authorities informed the police following the discovery. Police personnel visited the hospital and questioned staff members as part of the preliminary investigation.
The doctor’s body was subsequently sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Family Alleges Repeated Harassment and Threats
According to the complaint filed by the doctor’s father, the physician became acquainted with the woman in 2025 and the two later entered into a consensual relationship.
The family alleged that the doctor subsequently decided to end the relationship after learning that the woman was married and had a child.
The woman allegedly continued contacting him through phone calls and WhatsApp messages after he decided to end the relationship. The complaint further alleges that she threatened to harm herself and visited the doctor’s workplace on several occasions.
The family has also alleged that the woman’s husband visited the hospital and threatened the doctor on June 12 and August 18.
FIR Registered by Police
The doctor’s family approached Bhangagarh Police Station with the complaint on August 19. Police subsequently registered an FIR against the woman and her husband.
The allegations made in the complaint have not been established in court and remain under investigation.
Investigators are examining the allegations, the FIR and the events preceding the physician’s death to determine whether the reported harassment or threats had any connection with the circumstances surrounding his death.
Cause and Manner of Death Yet to Be Established
While some reports have described the physician’s death as suicide, authorities have not officially established the cause or manner of death at this stage.
The post-mortem examination and other evidence collected during the investigation are expected to help determine what happened.
Police are also examining the circumstances in which the physician was found unresponsive inside the ICU chamber and are speaking with hospital staff as part of the investigation.

Police are currently investigating the allegations made by the physician’s family, the FIR and the events leading up to his death.
The findings of the post-mortem examination, along with other evidence gathered during the investigation, will be important in establishing the cause and manner of death and determining whether the allegations of harassment or threats were connected to the incident.
