Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a 37-year-old doctor associated with RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was found dead under mysterious circumstances, police said on Monday. His family alleged that he had been suffering from severe work-related stress and depression.
Doctor Found Unresponsive at Home
The incident occurred late Sunday night at the doctor’s residence in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas district. According to police, the doctor, whose name has not been disclosed, had dinner with his wife, Dr. Aindrila Roy, a medical officer at Basirhat District Hospital, around 10 p.m.
Shortly after midnight, he reportedly complained of uneasiness and said he required immediate medical attention. He was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Family Alleges Stress and Depression
According to statements given to the police, the doctor had been under immense pressure at the state-run hospital. His wife informed investigators that he had consumed “a little too much medicine” on Sunday night and had been battling depression and job-related anxiety for several weeks.
Though the family has not yet lodged an official complaint, they have indicated that his mental health deteriorated due to workplace stress.
Police Begin Probe; Await Autopsy Report
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body to Barasat Hospital for post-mortem examination.
“The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy. All possible angles are being investigated,” said a senior officer from North 24 Parganas District Police.
Previous Tragedy at RG Kar Hospital
This incident comes just over a year after the shocking death of a postgraduate trainee at the same medical college on August 9, 2024. The case had triggered massive protests across the country, leading to the arrest and life imprisonment of Sanjoy Roy, the sole convict. However, the CBI probe into the larger conspiracy behind that crime is still ongoing.
Concerns Over Mental Health of Doctors
The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns over mental health issues among healthcare professionals, especially in high-pressure government hospitals. Colleagues and medical associations have called for stronger institutional support systems, counselling facilities, and stress management initiatives to prevent such incidents in the future.
