Surat: In a shocking case of cybercrime, a 37-year-old doctor operating clinics in Navsari and Gandevi has lodged a police complaint after being extorted of ₹1 lakh by cybercriminals using a sexually explicit video call.

Trap Laid Through Video Call

According to the FIR, the incident began on July 29 when the doctor received a late-night WhatsApp video call from an unknown number. During the 90-second call, a woman appeared on screen and allegedly undressed. The doctor tried to disconnect but was unable to do so. Soon after, the woman threatened him, claiming the call was recorded and would be made viral unless money was paid.

Extortion Through Multiple Payments

Fearing reputational damage, the doctor first transferred ₹10,000 via QR code. The demands escalated when the woman insisted the video had been uploaded online, forcing him to pay another ₹45,000 through multiple UPI transactions. Later, she demanded ₹70,000 more to “permanently delete” the video. The doctor managed to pay ₹35,000 himself and sought a friend’s help to transfer another ₹10,000.

Victim Approaches Police After Escalation

After repeated extortion, the doctor confided in his friend, who urged him to report the matter. He then approached the national cybercrime helpline (1930), following which a formal complaint was lodged with Gandevi police.

FIR Registered Against Three Accused

Police have registered an FIR against three individuals — the woman seen in the video call and two men accused of receiving the extorted money through UPI. Investigations are underway to track the accused and curb similar cyber extortion rackets.
