Sangamner : In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through this Ahmednagar district town, local physician Dr. Amol Karpe (42) was arrested Sunday on charges of raping a 16-year-old female patient at Karpe Hospital, where he served as a medical practitioner.
The Incident
According to police reports, the victim had been undergoing treatment at the private healthcare facility since April 4. The alleged assault occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when Dr. Karpe reportedly summoned the minor to the hospital terrace under the pretext of medical questioning.
Police Inspector Ravindra Deshmukh of Sangamner City Police Station stated, “The accused allegedly committed the crime around 4 AM and subsequently threatened the victim to prevent her from reporting the incident.”
Police Action
The matter came to light when the traumatized victim confided in her uncle later that day. A formal complaint was immediately filed, leading to swift police action.
The accused doctor fled the premises but was apprehended from Nashik within hours of the complaint being registered. He has been charged under:
- Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (rape)
- Relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012
- Section 506 (criminal intimidation)
Public Outcry
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across the city. Members of Shiv Sena (UBT) staged violent protests outside the hospital premises, demanding strict action against the accused. Police intervention prevented significant property damage.
A delegation submitted a memorandum to Sub-Divisional Officer Kunal Sonawane, calling for:
- Cancellation of the accused’s medical license
- Expedited trial in the case
- Enhanced security measures at medical facilities
Investigation Status
Sub-Inspector Farahnaz Patel, the investigating officer, confirmed that the accused will be produced before the local court on Monday. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the crime scene, and hospital CCTV footage is being examined.
Medical Community Reacts
The local branch of the Indian Medical Association has expressed shock at the allegations. “We condemn such acts in strongest terms and will cooperate fully with the investigation,” said a spokesperson.
Meanwhile, hospital authorities have assured patients of uninterrupted services with alternative medical staff.
