Gynaecologist Cites Threats, Mental Pressure Amid Accusations of Denial of Admission Over Deposit

Pune: Dr Sushrut Ghaisas, a consulting obstetrician and gynaecologist at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, has resigned from his position following widespread public backlash over the death of a pregnant woman who was allegedly denied admission for failing to pay a ₹10 lakh deposit.

The incident, which has triggered a wave of outrage and political reaction, involved the death of Tanisha Bhise, wife of the personal secretary to BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe. She passed away after delivering twin daughters at another hospital, shortly after being refused admission at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

Doctor Resigns Amid Threats and Public Pressure

Confirming the development, Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, the hospital’s medical director, said that Dr Ghaisas cited intense social media criticism, threat calls, and concern for his family’s safety as the reasons for his resignation.

“In his resignation letter, Dr Ghaisas mentioned the mental stress caused by the public anger and threats, which he fears could affect his ability to care for patients. To ensure that this does not compromise his professional integrity or the safety of his family, he has stepped down,” Dr Kelkar stated.

The resignation has been forwarded to the hospital trustees and is expected to be accepted. Dr Ghaisas will, however, continue his duties until Thursday to complete scheduled surgeries.

Political Fallout and Vandalism

As tensions over the incident escalated, members of the BJP Mahila Morcha (women’s wing) allegedly stormed into a clinic run by Dr Ghaisas’s mother in Pune’s Kothrud area last week and vandalised property, according to police sources. The act has added to the already volatile situation surrounding the case.

Family Alleges Medical Negligence

Relatives of the deceased woman have alleged that Dr Ghaisas insisted on the deposit amount before initiating treatment, effectively delaying critical medical attention. The hospital has not commented directly on these allegations but maintained that an internal review is underway.

The tragic case has spotlighted urgent concerns over medical ethics, emergency care practices, and accessibility to treatment in private hospitals—particularly in cases involving financial constraints.
