Ballari: The district hospital in Ballari has experienced a significant decline in deliveries over the past six weeks following the deaths of lactating mothers. Concerned about safety, expectant mothers are increasingly turning to private hospitals for childbirth.

The hospital, which typically recorded over 550 deliveries monthly, saw the numbers drop to 289 in November, compared to 585 in September and 577 in October, according to official data. District Surgeon Dr. Basareddy confirmed a 50% decrease in deliveries since the maternal deaths.

Shift to Private Hospitals

Once lauded for its high standards and attracting patients from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the district hospital was previously the preferred choice for IAS and IPS officers, judges, and elected representatives. However, the recent fatalities have raised safety concerns among the public and medical professionals alike.

The shift is evident as private maternity hospitals in the city are now operating at full capacity. Srinivasalu, a resident of Hosapete, shared, “We opted for a private hospital for our daughter-in-law despite the high costs because safety comes first.”

Reputational Impact and Concerns Among Medical Staff

Doctors at the district hospital expressed anxiety over the situation, citing stringent directives and the damage to the hospital’s reputation. “These deaths have tarnished our hospital’s standing, and we are under tremendous pressure,” admitted several doctors.

Reassurances from Authorities

Dr. Basareddy remains optimistic, stating, “This is a temporary phase. By December 14, we had managed 75 deliveries. Our hospital continues to provide excellent care, and the public should not panic.”

Despite these assurances, public confidence in the district hospital remains shaken, pushing many families toward private options to ensure safer childbirth.
