Major Boost to Affordable Cancer Care in State Health Sector
In a significant step towards strengthening specialised cancer treatment in the public healthcare system, Chhatrapati Pramila Raje (CPR) Civil Hospital in Kolhapur is set to launch a bone marrow transplant facility next month. The unit, being established in association with Rajarshi Shahu Government Medical College, will become the first bone marrow transplant centre in a state-run civil hospital in Maharashtra.
The upcoming facility is expected to provide a lifeline for patients suffering from blood cancers, who currently rely largely on expensive private hospitals for transplant procedures. Health officials believe the initiative will improve access to advanced cancer treatment while reducing the financial burden on patients and their families.
First-of-Its-Kind Facility in Maharashtra Government Health System
Dean Dr. Sadanand Bhise said the bone marrow transplant unit is in its final stages of preparation and is expected to become operational next month. Initially, the facility will cater to patients diagnosed with blood cancers, while future expansion plans may include treatment for thalassemia patients as well.
Medical experts explained that bone marrow is responsible for producing red and white blood cells. In patients affected by blood cancers, this vital function is disrupted, often making bone marrow transplantation an essential treatment option.
Affordable Treatment Through Government Insurance Schemes
The introduction of the transplant facility is particularly important given the high cost of treatment in private hospitals, where bone marrow transplant procedures can cost between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh.
According to Haematologist Dr. Varun Bafna, government-backed health insurance schemes will significantly reduce treatment expenses. Under Ayushman Bharat, eligible patients can receive coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh for fully matched transplants and up to Rs 17 lakh for partially matched transplant procedures.
Rising Burden of Blood Cancer Cases in Kolhapur
Hospital data reveal a growing incidence of blood-related cancers in Kolhapur district, with nearly 10,000 patients across various age groups currently affected. CPR Hospital reportedly receives two to three new patients every day for diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of blood disorders and cancers.
The increasing patient load has highlighted the need for a dedicated transplant centre within the government healthcare network.
Existing Haematology Services Strengthen New Initiative
CPR Hospital already operates a haematology day-care unit that provides treatment and support for patients suffering from thalassemia, haemophilia and sickle cell disease. The Maharashtra government has approved Rs 8.40 crore to strengthen these specialised services, with a major portion of the funding earmarked for essential medicines and advanced treatments.
Early Diagnosis Remains Key in Blood Cancer Treatment
Doctors emphasised that timely diagnosis continues to play a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes for blood cancer patients. Routine investigations such as platelet count, haemoglobin assessment and lymphoid evaluations can help detect suspected cases at an early stage.
While bone marrow transplantation carries certain medical risks, specialists noted that successful procedures can offer a potentially curative treatment option for eligible patients, significantly improving survival rates and quality of life.
Strengthening Public Healthcare Infrastructure
The launch of Maharashtra’s first bone marrow transplant facility in a government civil hospital marks a major milestone in the state’s healthcare infrastructure. The initiative is expected to enhance access to advanced cancer care, reduce treatment costs and provide critical support to thousands of patients battling blood-related disorders across the region.
