A 19-year-old college student died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital near Sriperumbudur after suffering a finger injury while working at his father’s sugarcane juice stall. The family has alleged medical negligence, claiming that the surgery was delayed, two fingers were amputated instead of one, and inexperienced doctors were involved in his treatment. Police have registered a case, and health authorities have ordered an inquiry into the allegations.
A 19-year-old college student allegedly died due to medical negligence while undergoing treatment at a private hospital near Sriperumbudur after sustaining a finger injury at a sugarcane juice stall.
According to reports, the student suffered a serious injury to a finger on his right hand while helping his father at their sugarcane juice stall in Perambur on Sunday. His hand reportedly got trapped in the crushing machine, causing severe damage to one of his fingers.
He was initially treated at a private hospital before being referred to another private hospital in Thandalam. According to his family, doctors advised immediate surgery to amputate the injured finger. However, they alleged that the surgery was delayed until the evening and that two fingers were amputated despite being informed that only one would be removed.
The family further claimed that the student’s condition deteriorated after the surgery. They accused the hospital of medical negligence, alleging that inexperienced doctors and trainee medical personnel were involved in his treatment. The student died on Tuesday morning.
Following his death, relatives staged a protest outside the hospital and briefly prevented an ambulance from taking the body for postmortem examination. The protest was withdrawn after the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Sriperumbudur assured the family that a thorough inquiry would be conducted.
Police have registered a case and sent the body to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for autopsy. Sources said the matter has also been referred to the Joint Director of Health Services, Kancheepuram, for an investigation into the allegations.
The inquiry is expected to determine whether any medical negligence occurred and whether further legal or administrative action is warranted.
