Dr. Anita Kumari takes charge, raising hopes for better administration, improved patient care, and full utilisation of AYUSH facilities

After nearly a year of functioning without a dedicated head, the district of Chamba has appointed a full-time District AYUSH Officer. Dr. Anita Kumari has officially taken charge at the District Ayurvedic Hospital Baloo, a move expected to significantly strengthen AYUSH healthcare services in the region.

Year-Long Vacancy Led to Administrative Challenges

For the past year, AYUSH services in the district were managed through additional charge by officers posted in Paprola and Tunuhatti. Since these अधिकारियों were already handling responsibilities at their primary postings, they could not devote adequate time to Chamba’s healthcare needs.

This arrangement led to administrative inefficiencies, delayed decision-making, and a noticeable impact on patient care. The absence of a full-time अधिकारी further worsened the situation, as there was no dedicated authority to oversee operations, address complaints, or ensure coordination across healthcare centres.

Temporary Arrangements Drew Criticism

The reliance on additional charge instead of a permanent appointment faced criticism from local stakeholders. It weakened accountability and disrupted the smooth functioning of AYUSH facilities. Several centres struggled to operate at full capacity due to insufficient supervision and manpower shortages.

Direct Oversight to Improve Patient Services

With a regular District AYUSH Officer now in place, patients and residents finally have a direct point of contact for AYUSH-related concerns. Issues such as staff shortages, irregular services, and infrastructural gaps are expected to be addressed more effectively and communicated promptly to the authorities.

Underutilised Hospital Capacity Remains a Key Issue

One of the most pressing concerns has been the underutilisation of the district Ayurvedic hospital. Despite having approval for 50 beds, only about 15 beds were functional due to limited staff and resources. This mismatch between capacity and actual service delivery has long affected patient care in the region.

Renewed Hope for Healthcare Expansion

The appointment of Dr. Anita Kumari has sparked optimism that these long-standing gaps will now be addressed. Improved management, better allocation of resources, and stronger oversight are expected to gradually enhance healthcare delivery and help the hospital move towards full operational capacity.

The development marks an important step in strengthening AYUSH infrastructure and ensuring more accessible, efficient, and reliable healthcare services for the people of Chamba.
