District Health Authority Flags Safety Concerns
A senior gynaecologist at Morigaon Civil Hospital, Dr. Kantheswar Bordoloi, has been issued a showcause notice after performing 21 caesarean deliveries in just 10 hours. The district health administration flagged concerns about sterilisation practices, patient safety, and record-keeping during the marathon procedures.
Timeline of Surgeries
According to official records, the surgeries were conducted between 3:40 pm on September 5 and 1:50 am on September 6 in the hospital’s major operating theatre. Authorities noted inadequate pre- and post-operative documentation during a hospital inspection the following day.
Doctor Defends His Actions
Dr. Bordoloi defended himself, stating that he is capable of handling multiple surgeries in limited time based on patients’ conditions. He claimed that a single C-section may take 15–25 minutes, and with two operating tables available, sterilisation protocols were alternated. “There is nothing unusual in what I have done,” he said, suggesting the complaint may have come from rivals.
Health Authority’s Demands
The showcause notice directs Dr. Bordoloi to submit case-wise reports on preparation, sterilisation protocols, and medical justification for each C-section. Authorities also asked him to document any instances of fetal distress that warranted emergency surgeries.
Patient Outcomes
Of the 21 mothers, 19 and their newborns have been discharged in stable condition, officials confirmed. Two remain under care — including one referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
