Panaji: The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Goa, on Wednesday inaugurated a joint Integrative Oncology Research and Care Centre, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in India to combine modern oncology with AYUSH systems of medicine. The centre aims to enhance cancer patients’ quality of life by offering evidence-based integrative care, officials said.

First Clinic Session and Case Discussions

The inaugural clinic was held at AIIA’s newly launched centre in Dhargal, North Goa. During the session, four complex cancer cases were presented before a multi-disciplinary panel consisting of oncologists, AYUSH experts, and senior researchers. Patients and their relatives were present, with their queries addressed through detailed deliberations.

Evidence-Based Integrative Approach

Officials highlighted that each case was assessed from diverse clinical perspectives. Following comprehensive discussions, the panel reached a consensus on therapeutic and adjuvant treatment options. The integrative model, they said, is designed to provide patients with holistic, evidence-based solutions that improve treatment outcomes while also focusing on overall well-being.

Significance of the Initiative

Calling it a milestone, Dr Shekhar Salkar, senior oncosurgeon at Manipal Hospital and member of an empowered committee, said, “This is the first-of-its-kind collaboration in India, and it is significant that Goa has taken the lead.” He added that such clinics will be organised monthly at AIIA Goa, with prior appointments required. Experts from premier institutions, including Tata Memorial Centre and its ACTREC wing in Navi Mumbai, are part of the collaboration.

Patient Feedback and Future Plans

According to organisers, the joint effort reflects a shared vision of modern and traditional medicine experts working together for holistic cancer care. Patients who attended the first session reported being “immensely benefited” by the exercise. Officials confirmed that regular monthly sessions will continue, strengthening the bridge between modern oncology and AYUSH practices.
