Ahmedabad, Feb 20: The Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has suspended the medical licenses of Dr. Sanjay Muljibhai Patoliya (M.B.B.S., M.S. Surgery) and Dr. Shaileshkumar Amrutlal Anand (M.B.B.S., D.C.M.) for three years over their involvement in the Khyati Hospital scam. The decision was made during a GMC General Body meeting, citing serious ethical violations and risks to public health.

Uncovering the Khyati Hospital Scam

The fraudulent scheme was exposed when Khyati Multispeciality Hospital conducted a medical camp in Kadi under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). During the camp, unnecessary angiographies were performed on 19 individuals, and stents were implanted in their hearts without medical justification.

The malpractice came to light after two patients—Nagarbhai Senma (59) and Mahesh Barot (45)—died following unwarranted angioplasty procedures in November 2024. Further investigations linked nine deaths to the hospital’s fraudulent activities.

Fraudulent Medical Camps and Financial Exploitation

Khyati Hospital targeted rural areas, including Borisana village in Mehsana district, under the pretense of free health check-ups. Investigators found that healthy individuals were falsely diagnosed with severe cardiac conditions and pressured into undergoing invasive angioplasty procedures. Shockingly, even an 18-year-old was subjected to these unnecessary treatments.

The hospital exploited PM-JAY, a government scheme providing health insurance coverage up to ₹5 lakh per beneficiary. Over 18 months, Khyati Hospital illegally claimed ₹11 crore, with 70% of the revenue coming from PM-JAY funds.

Crackdown and Arrests

Following the exposure of the scam, authorities arrested multiple individuals, including:

  • Chirag Rajput, CEO of Khyati Hospital
  • Dr. Sanjay Patoliya, Medical Director
  • Kartik Patel, Hospital Director, who was caught attempting to flee at Ahmedabad airport

Authorities have indicated that further legal action is expected as the investigation continues.
