16-Year-Old Telangana Girl Dies After Injections by RMP, Negligence Case Registered
Class 8 student died after allegedly becoming unconscious and developing breathing difficulty following injections administered by a Rural Medical Practitioner in Khammam district.
A 16-year-old girl died in Telangana’s Khammam district after allegedly receiving injections from a Rural Medical Practitioner (RMP), prompting police to register a case over suspected medical negligence.
The incident occurred on August 9 in Baswapuram village of Konijerla mandal. The deceased was a Class 8 student at the government-run Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) and had returned home for the Bonalu festival.
Girl Developed Symptoms and Was Taken to RMP
According to a complaint filed by her father, the girl developed cold and cough symptoms and was taken to a local RMP at around 6 p.m.
The father alleged that the practitioner inserted a cannula into her left hand and administered an injection. While a second injection was allegedly being administered, the girl suddenly became unconscious and began frothing at the mouth, according to the complaint.
Her father immediately took her to a private hospital in Khammam. The family reached the hospital at around 8 p.m., where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police Register Case Against RMP
The girl’s father subsequently lodged a complaint alleging that the RMP had administered injections despite not possessing the required medical qualifications.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to causing death by a rash or negligent act.
Speaking to TOI, a police official said the girl’s parents also alleged that the RMP was under the influence of alcohol while treating her. They claimed that the injection was followed almost immediately by breathing difficulty and her subsequent death. Police clarified that these allegations are yet to be established.
RMP Absconding, Investigation Underway
The RMP is currently absconding, and police are making efforts to trace him.
Investigators are examining the treatment administered to the girl and the circumstances leading up to her death, including findings from the medical examination.
Incident Raises Concerns Over Unqualified Practitioners
The death has renewed concerns over the role of RMPs in providing medical treatment in Telangana.
Doctors’ organisations in the state have previously raised objections to unqualified practitioners administering medical treatment and urged the government to take action against individuals practising without the required qualifications.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that, as part of its ongoing drive against illegal medical practice, the Telangana Medical Council identified four clinics in Alwal where unqualified medical professionals were allegedly practising modern medicine without the required qualifications, registration or legal authorisation.
