Ahmedabad: Dr Ganesh Baraiya, just three feet tall and weighing 20 kilograms, has achieved a remarkable milestone at the age of 25. After a prolonged legal battle that reached the Supreme Court, he has finally secured his first appointment as a medical officer. He will report for duty on Thursday, marking the beginning of a career built on resilience, determination, and extraordinary courage.

Triumph Over Disability and Barriers

Born with dwarfism and assessed with a 72 per cent locomotor disability, Baraiya’s entry into government service stands as a testament to his perseverance. Despite systemic barriers and repeated doubts about his abilities, he persisted, turning his dream of serving as a doctor into reality. He now hopes to specialise in paediatrics, dermatology or radiology, according to reports.

From Rejection to Recognition

Baraiya’s journey began with rejection in 2018, when the Medical Council of India (MCI), now the National Medical Commission (NMC), deemed him unfit to pursue an MBBS course due to his physical condition. Refusing to give up, he challenged the decision in the Gujarat High Court and later the Supreme Court. The apex court ruled in his favour the same year, allowing him admission to Government Medical College, Bhavnagar.

Support System During Medical Training

His years in medical school were shaped by strong support from friends and teachers. During anatomy classes, he was always given a front-row seat so he could learn comfortably. In surgery postings, classmates would carry him on their shoulders to ensure he had a clear view of the operating tables. Baraiya says this collective support ensured that his height never became a barrier to his education.

A Dream Rooted in Family Commitment

Despite his professional achievements, Baraiya’s foremost priority remains his family. Born into a humble household of farmers in Gorkhi village in Bhavnagar district, he is one of eight siblings. His biggest dream is to build a permanent, well-equipped home for his parents and siblings. Construction of the house has stalled multiple times due to financial constraints, but with his new salary he hopes to complete it soon.

Inspiring Confidence Among Patients

Baraiya says he is used to patients’ initial surprise upon seeing him. Many are taken aback by his appearance, but their hesitation fades once they hear about his journey. He shares that patients quickly grow to trust him, moved by his dedication and the challenges he overcame to wear the white coat.

Symbol of Determination and Hope

His story has become a symbol of hope for many aspiring medical students facing physical or systemic challenges. Baraiya’s courage in confronting legal hurdles and societal perceptions has inspired many across Gujarat and beyond, proving that merit, grit and passion always triumph.

Reporting for Duty, Ready to Serve

As Dr Baraiya prepares to begin his first posting as a medical officer, his journey stands as a powerful reminder of what determination can achieve. With his appointment, he closes one chapter of struggle and opens another filled with service, ambition and the promise of transforming lives—beginning with his own family and his village.
