Chennai : In a historic feat for global transplant medicine, MGM Healthcare in Chennai has successfully performed the world’s first Modified Multi-Visceral Transplant (MMVT), saving the life of a 32-year-old patient from Kerala battling a rare and life-threatening intestinal disorder.
The patient suffered from bloody diarrhoea, severe anaemia, malnutrition, recurrent infections, and abdominal swelling. His condition had been deteriorating with conventional treatments offering no long-term relief.
Groundbreaking Procedure
The surgical team carried out the replacement of multiple abdominal organs — including the stomach, pancreatico-duodenal complex, small intestine, and large intestine — with modifications designed to enhance graft function and reduce immunological complications.
The operation was led by Dr. Anil Vaidya, Director of the Institute of Multi-Visceral and Abdominal Organ Transplant, supported by:
- Dr. Senthil Muthuraman, Senior Consultant, Multi-Visceral and Abdominal Organ Transplant
- Dr. Sivakumar Mahalingam, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology
- Dr. Venkatesh B.S., Consultant, Multi-Visceral Transplant Programme
The critical anaesthesia and intensive care were handled by Dr. Dinesh Babu and Dr. Nivash Chandrasekaran.
A New Era in Transplant Medicine
According to hospital officials, the patient is recovering well and the success of this innovative surgery marks a major milestone in the field. It also opens doors for new treatment protocols for patients with complex gastrointestinal and abdominal organ disorders, offering renewed hope to many across the globe.
This achievement places India at the forefront of cutting-edge transplant innovations and highlights the growing capabilities of Indian healthcare institutions on the global stage.
