Pathology Doctor at Burdwan Medical College Dismissed After Departmental Enquiry; Health Department Recommends Action That May Affect Future Government Employment
The Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, has terminated the senior residency of a doctor from the Department of Pathology at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, Purba Barddhaman, with immediate effect and directed him to deposit Rs 20 lakh towards the bond amount in accordance with the terms of his appointment.
According to an official notification issued with the approval of the competent authority, the doctor was placed under suspension on September 5, 2024. During the suspension period, an enquiry committee examined multiple allegations against him, including criminal cases, FIRs, investigations conducted by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), and other complaints.
Following a detailed assessment of the enquiry findings, the Health Department concluded that the charges against the doctor had been substantiated. Consequently, the competent authority approved the termination of his tenure as Senior Resident with immediate effect.
The development comes amid earlier disciplinary action against doctors allegedly linked to the controversial “North Bengal Lobby.” Previously, the West Bengal Health Department had suspended and transferred doctors from Burdwan Medical College following allegations of misconduct and their alleged association with former R.G. Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh, who is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged financial irregularities.
The notification further directs the doctor to refund the bond amount as stipulated in his appointment conditions. Since he joined as a Bond Senior Resident on November 16, 2022, the recoverable amount has been calculated at Rs 20 lakh, based on the prescribed bond value of Rs 10 lakh per year for two years.
In addition, the Health Department has informed the West Bengal Medical Council about the findings of the enquiry report and recommended further action. The notification indicates that such action could impact the doctor’s eligibility for future government employment.
The decision underscores the state government’s continued efforts to enforce accountability and maintain professional standards within public healthcare institutions.
