Five Residential Gurukuls Proposed to Combine Higher Secondary Education with Professional Ayurveda Training
In a major initiative to strengthen Ayurveda education at the grassroots level, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to establish five specialised Ayurveda Gurukuls that will allow students to begin their medical education immediately after completing Class 10. The proposed institutions will integrate higher secondary education with structured Ayurveda training, creating a direct pathway to the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme.
According to the proposal, each Ayurveda Gurukul will admit 100 students through an entrance examination conducted after the Class 10 board examinations. Alongside completing their intermediate education, students will receive systematic training in Ayurveda before progressing to the BAMS course.
The proposed institutions will follow the traditional Gurukul system, where students will live on campus and study under the guidance of experienced teachers in a disciplined residential environment. The curriculum is expected to blend academic learning with practical lifestyle education while following a structured syllabus.
Principal Secretary (AYUSH), Shri Ranjan Kumar, said the initiative is aimed at producing Ayurveda practitioners with a strong foundation in India’s traditional medical knowledge. The programme will place significant emphasis on the study of Sanskrit texts related to Ayurveda while also ensuring students gain an understanding of modern healthcare concepts.
Speaking about the initiative, Kumar said the objective is not only to teach Ayurvedic medicine but also to impart India’s age-old healing and wellness principles. He added that the integrated approach would help produce practitioners who possess knowledge of both traditional and modern systems of medicine.
Government officials said the proposal is expected to be placed before the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet for approval before the curriculum is finalised. Simultaneously, the process of identifying suitable land for establishing the five Ayurveda Gurukuls is expected to begin.
The residential campuses will accommodate students from diverse social and economic backgrounds, encouraging collective learning, discipline, and community living. Officials have also indicated that the number of Gurukuls could be expanded in the future depending on the performance and success of the first phase of the project.
The initiative reflects the Uttar Pradesh government’s continued focus on strengthening the AYUSH sector and promoting traditional Indian systems of medicine through structured medical education from the school level.
